Definition: "A type of colored melanophore (mobile pigment cells of the dermis and epidermis) that contain fat-soluble carotenoids (obtained from the diet) and pteridines (synthesized from the cell) which are stored in pterinosomes. Their color depends on the pattern of carotenoids and pteridines. They are rarely found in pre-metamorphic larvae."
