(A) and (B) are sections about a quarter of the way through the embryo from the anterior end, at the level of the most anterior somites. In such sections Xtwi is expressed in the lateral plate (lp) and in the notochord (n), in contrast to cardiac actin, which is expressed only in the somites (s). In (A), labeling by Xtwi of the forming neural crest is just detectable (unlabeled arrows).
