During the gastrula stage, neural tissue is induced and the anterior–posterior (AP) axis is determined, resulting in fundamental neural tissue patterning. At the neurula stage, the anterior neural plate is subdivided into the telencephalon (red), diencephalon (yellow), mesencephalon (green), and rhombencephalon by the restricted expression of several brain-specific genes.
