The nek3 gene encodes a serine/threonine-protein kinase. In early development, its mrna is expressed maternally and localizes to the brain, neural tube, eye, branchial arches, and pronephros during neurula and tailbud stages. The protein is involved in cell cycle progression through regulating cdk1 phosphorylation and can induce apoptosis when overexpressed; it also functions in dna damage response pathways including mediating chk1 activation.
