The gene dlx6 encodes a homeodomain transcription factor. Its expression is detected in the branchial arches, forebrain, and mid-hindbrain boundary during development. The protein functions in craniofacial patterning, particularly in jaw development derived from the first branchial arch. It is involved in anterior-posterior patterning within the central nervous system and contributes to the specification of gabaergic neuronal subtypes. The dlx6 protein localizes to the nucleus where it regulates the transcription of downstream target genes. [-]
