AI Protein Function : The smad6 protein functions as an intracellular inhibitory SMAD that antagonizes BMP signaling, thereby modulating dorsoventral patterning and neural crest induction; it is expressed in the neural plate, dorsal ectoderm, branchial arches, heart primordium, and craniofacial cartilage, and it localizes to the cytoplasm with regulated nuclear import. As a signaling regulator, smad6 binds BMP type I receptors to block phosphorylation of receptor‑regulated SMADs and can associate with transcriptional complexes in the nucleus to repress BMP‑responsive genes.
