Mucous membrane of the stomach. The surface layer of the mucosa is composed of simple columnar epithelium. Invaginations of the surface epithelium form gastric pits. Branching off of the gastric pits are gastric glands that aid digestion. The underlying loose connective tissue of the lamina propria contains many capillaries that transport absorbed nutrients into the circulation. The deepest layer of the mucosa is the muscularis mucosa, which is a layer of smooth muscle cells.
