Chambers of the external nares. The external nares constricts to specifically admit air in the one chamber (1) that leads to the nasal cavity when the nares are above the water level. Below the water level, the nares constricts to admit water into a second chamber (2) lined with olfactory epithelium, thus enabling the frog to detect water-borne odorants.
