High magnification image of the retina. The retina is a layered structure. The photoreceptors respond to photons of light that pass through the retina, and the neural signal is transmitted through the retinal layers to the ganglion cells. There are both rod and cone photoreceptors in the Xenopus retina, and the distal portions of the rod outer segments are intimately associated with the apical microvilli of the pigment epithelium.
