C. Michael Jones

Research Description

My research strives to understand the cell-to-cell signalling events that govern early pattern formation in the vertebrate embryo. The approach combines the latest molecular techniques with classical embryonic manipulations and utilises the Xenopus embryo system.

The focus is on several aspects of early embryonic signalling. These include:

1. Studying how morphogen gradients are established and function within embryonic tissues;

2. Studying how the presumptive anterior endoderm is generated and signals to surrounding tissues, and

3. Studying the Xenopus cognate of a novel mouse gene, Arkadia, which is essential for early embryonic patterning.
