The fmod protein is a secreted proteoglycan of the small leucine-rich repeat proteoglycan family. In early development, fmod mrna localizes to the developing notochord, somites, heart primordia, branchial arches, and otic vesicle. It exhibits dynamic expression in the cranial cartilage, cement gland, and pronephros. Later expression is prominent in the developing craniofacial skeleton, eyes, and other connective tissues including tendons. The protein functions in extracellular matrix organization, collagen fibrillogenesis, and cell adhesion, playing a role in cranial and cartilaginous development. Fmod influences neural crest cell migration and is implicated in anterior-posterior patterning. [-]
