AI Protein Function : The nlrp3 protein functions as an intracellular innate immune sensor that forms part of the inflammasome complex. It contains a nacht domain and a leucine-rich repeat region. The protein localizes to the cytoplasm where it responds to pathogenic and sterile insults by facilitating caspase-1 activation, which leads to the processing and secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines il-1β and il-18. Expression is detected in immune cells and various tissues including the liver, gut, and skin.
