In situ hybridization analysis using digoxygenin labeled antisense probes hybridized to a developmental series of whole Xenopus embryos. XCG (A-D) and XAG (E-H) (Sive et al., 1989) transcripts are first detected at late gastrula, in dispersed cells within the outer layer of the dorsal ectoderm, just anterior to the presumptive neural plate (A, E). XCG is detected in presumptive cement gland cells only, whereas XAG is detected in cement gland cells (arrowheads) and more weakly in the adjacent, posterior hatching gland cells (arrows). XA transcripts (CL) (Sive et al., 1989) are initially detected at late gastrula stage in the hatching gland primordium (I), and then at early neurula stage, in the cells of the posterior cement gland (J).
