The gene nog encodes a secreted signaling protein belonging to the TGF-β superfamily. The nog protein functions as a bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) antagonist, binding directly to BMP ligands to inhibit their activity. This inhibition is involved in patterning the early embryo, including specifying neural tissue by antagonizing BMP signals within the ectoderm and establishing left-right asymmetry. It plays a role in the development of the notochord, neural tube, somites, and heart valves. During myogenesis, nog inhibits BMP to promote muscle formation. The protein is localized extracellularly following its secretion. [-]
