AI Protein Function : The gene ctnna1 encodes a classical type i cadherin-associated catenin protein, an alpha-catenin adhesion molecule that links the cadherin-catenin complex to the actin cytoskeleton at adherens junctions. It is required for proper neural crest cell migration and cranial cartilage formation. The protein localizes to the cytoplasm and cell cortex, and its function is necessary for the convergent extension movements during gastrulation, particularly in the dorsal mesoderm and blastopore lip. It interacts directly with beta-catenin and f-actin to mediate strong cell-cell adhesion.
