Job Description

Position Overview The Zhou Lab in the Department of Molecular Biosciences at the University of Kansas-Lawrence studies the molecular mechanisms of DNA organization in the context of embryogenesis and evolution using the African clawed frog Xenopus. We are seeking a full-time Assistant Researcher to work on a project investigating the consequences of genome size on nuclear organization during animal development. The successful applicant will perform basic molecular biology techniques including but not limited to: DNA isolation from embryos, molecular cloning of genes, protein expression and purification, immunoblotting and immunostaining. The individual will be trained by Dr. Zhou, and execute experiments individually and as part of a small team. The job also requires some simple lab organization duties, such as maintaining supplies and common reagents as well as some animal care. This position would be ideal for someone with a recent undergraduate degree with an interest in building their professional and scientific skills in order to advance to the next stage of their career. In addition to training in these skills, the individual will receive direct mentorship from Dr. Zhou and engage in networking opportunities at KU and beyond. The ideal candidate will also be able to commit to 2 years of work. Description 60% - Research and Projects The successful applicant will work directly with Dr. Zhou on a scientific research project with an end goal of publication. This project will involve DNA isolation from frog embryos and subsequent analysis for genome sequencing, as well as some molecular biology techniques including western blot analysis, molecular cloning and protein expression and purification. 20% - Lab Organization and Maintenance The successful applicant will work as part of a team to keep the lab clean and organized. These duties will include ordering, organizing, making stock solutions (e.g. buffers), keeping electronic inventory, autoclaving/cleaning glass and plastic-ware, and general lab upkeep (including cleaning). 20% - Animal Care The successful applicant will work as part of a team to keep maintain the health of the frog colonies. These duties will include feeding frogs, cleaning frog tanks and testing water quality. These duties may involve some minimal work on the weekend (15-20 minutes on either Saturday or Sunday). Required Qualifications -a BA or BS in biology, biochemistry, cell biology or a related discipline -One (1) year experience on a lab-based research project as evidenced on application materials Preferred Qualifications -Previous work experience which included basic laboratory techniques, as evidenced by application materials. -Laboratory experience in molecular biology, genetics, or biochemistry as evidenced by application materials. -Previous work experience which included laboratory experience in: (i) DNA/RNA extraction and analysis (ii) recombinant protein molecular cloning (iii) protein purification and (iv) live animal work, as evidenced by application materials. -Strong organizational skills including the ability to multi-task and plan ahead as evidenced by application materials.
