Position: Curator of Herpetology

Research Description:

Dr. David Blackburn is interested in the evolution, diversity, and conservation of amphibians with a focus on both frogs and Africa. His research program is diverse and integrates studies of phenotypes, geographic distributions, and natural history. Current projects focus on African frogs include molecular phylogenetics, fossils, natural history, and reproductive biology of threatened frog species.

This research is currently supported by several grants, including the US National Science Foundation for both biodiversity surveys and phenotype informatics as well as the JRS Biodiversity Foundation for digitization of scientific collections in Africa.

Recent field expeditions to study African amphibians and reptiles include work in Angola, Burundi, Cameroon, Nigeria, and Uganda.
