Name: Dr. Allan F. Wiechmann
Position: Associate Professor
Research Description:
We have been using the Xenopus laevis model to study circadian signaling in various tissues of the eye, especially the retina and cornea. Much of our work has involved identification of melatonin receptor subtypes in the retina. We have used the simplified REMI system generate transgenic frogs that over-express melatonin receptors and some matrix metalloproteinases that may be under the influence of circadian signals. We recently became interested in utilizing the CRISPR/Cas9 approach to knock out specific melatonin receptors in the eye of Xenopus tropicalis.
