Name: Bernard Zalc, MD, PhD.
Position: Director of Research, Professor Emeritus
Research Description:
Dr. Bernard Zalc (MD, DrSci) is Directeur de Recherche Emeritus (INSERM) since September 2014. He received his MD degree and PhD in Neuroscience from University P.& M. Curie. He has been a post-Doc at University of Michigan (MHRI) (1974-1975), and after his military service he was recruited at Inserm in 1976 as Attaché de Recherche. Chargé de Recherche in 1981, Directeur de Recherche in 1988, and promoted Classe Exceptionnelle in 2007. In 1998 he created the Inserm Unit "Biologie des Interactions Neurones-Glie", which he directed till 2009. From 2009 till 2014 he was Director of the Research Centre of the Brain and Spinal Cord Institute (ICM) in Hôpital de la Salpêtrière, Paris (icm-institute.org/en/). After stepping down from the direction of the institute he is co-directing in the ICM, with J.-L. Thomas, the team 'oligodendrocyte development & neurovascular interactions'. Dr. Zalc's scientific interest is in the biology of myelin forming cells and related demyelinating diseases. He has focused his efforts on the understanding of the phylogeny and ontogeny of the oligodendrocyte, the myelin-forming cell in the central nervous system. He has also used positron emission tomography to visualize demyelinated areas and evaluating remyelination in Multiple Sclerosis patients. His present work is devoted to the development of transgenic Xenopus models for live imaging of demyelination and remyelination.
