Research Description:

Dr. John Measey is a Professor at the Centre for Invasion Biology (C·I·B) based in the Institute for Biodiversity at Yunnan University and at the Department of Botany and Zoology at Stellenbosch University, South Africa. He is also an Honorary Attaché of the Museum National D'Histoire Naturelle, Paris. His research centers on biological invasions and other ecological investigations incorporating a wide range of techniques to address hypotheses in evolution, conservation and population biology.

"I study the rapid evolutionary processes that occur during animal invasions, with particular attention to environmental impact and potential management applications. Studies in my lab combine field observation data with laboratory and mesocosm experiments to provide a whole evidence framework that attempts to broadly define the contributions of a number of traits: physiological, morphological, behavioural and immunological. I am especially interested in trying to determine the mechanisms underlying successful invasions, particularly the role of the gut microbiome. In doing so, I hope to be able to contribute to methods that will restrict success of invasive species, improve biosecurity, as well as contribute to our greater understanding of rapid evolutionary processes."
In addition to his research, John also writes about how to write and publish science. This is the subject of two books, a postgraduate course, workshops and an open access online platform that is continually updated.
