The nppc gene encodes a natriuretic peptide precursor protein, which is processed to form a secreted signaling molecule. This protein localizes to cilia on the apical surface of multiciliated cells in the epidermis and the developing pronephros. It functions as a chemoattractant ligand that binds to the npr2 receptor, establishing left-right asymmetry by directing directional fluid flow. In the pronephric kidney, it promotes cilia motility and is involved in fluid clearance. Expression is also detected in the brain, spinal cord, and olfactory placode. [-]
